The AHA! Moment
The inspiration for my First Mobile App.
In mid 2008 the iPhone became available in Canada, one year after it’s U.S. roll out. I had been thinking a lot about the device for the previous year as I watched the App ecosystem blossom.
I have always been a keen observer of emerging technology and one to ask the question, “What can we do with this product other than what is was designed for”? I had spent the period from 2004-2007 working on the development of Global Cultures Television, a TV channel that would, “Show the World to the World” by capturing on video the “everyday” in villages, towns and cities around the world using the Mise-en-Scene method of early filmmaker Dziga Vertov.
So one day that summer, I asked myself, “What would I do if I could connect with anyone else in the world with an iPhone”?
My answer was immediate and simple: I would ask them to send me a photo or a video from where they lived.
AHA!
That goal has never left me and it is my hope that One Degree users, besides earning an extra living with the App, will participate in the Social Snaps program that will allow people the world over to share photos and videos of where they live with each other, in the name of global cultural goodwill.
