This guide will show you how to set up your ORCID and connect it with Pure.

  1. Why are ORCIDs needed?
  2. Benefits of ORCID
  3. Linking your ORCID and Pure accounts

1. Why are ORCIDs needed?

Unless your name is very uncommon, there’s a good chance you’ll share it with at least one other researcher. This may cause the occasional inconvenience like receiving an email in error. Or it could be more serious; say your most recent paper is misattributed to someone else by an automated citation indexing databases like Scopus or Web of Knowledge, meaning you miss out on the credit you deserve.

2. Benefits of ORCID

ORCID is a global initiative which allows you to claim a unique ID which can then follow you through your career. It’s like a national insurance number but for researchers and is designed to make it much less likely that systems will confuse you with someone else with your name. It’s free to create and becomes more powerful when linked to your research activities.

3. Linking your ORCID and Pure accounts

Once you claim your ORCID you can easily ensure your most recent outputs are linked by synchronising it with your Pure account. You only have to give the permission once and then every new research output or activity that is added to your Pure account will automatically connect to your ORCID, ensuring that your public research profile is always up-to-date.

The steps you should follow depend on whether you already have an ORCID. Log in to Pure and look at the Personal overview page.

  • If you do not see an ORCID on the Personal overview page (e.g. orcid.org/0000-0000-0000-0000) in Pure, you will need to create one.
  • If there is already an ORCID on the Personal overview page in Pure (e.g. orcid.org/0000-0000-0000-0000), you will just need to link it.
Click the image which is most similar to the Personal overview page in Pure, or one of the links in the list above.

Step 1: On the Personal overview page in Pure, click on the Edit profile button.

Step 2: In the personal identification section, click on the button Create or Connect your ORCID ID.

Step 3: Read through the pop-up message which appears. It explains the content that will be synchronised with ORCID once you have registered. Once you have read the message, click Proceed.

Step 4: Once you have created your ORCID you will be asked to Authorise the integration after which Pure will automatically export the content listed below. New content is exported on a nightly basis.

  • Institutional organisational affiliation
  • Other personal identifiers (e.g. Scopus ID, Researcher ID)
  • Your Research Explorer URL
  • Your Research Outputs

Step 5: Once you have authorised the integration you will be returned to Pure and your new ORCID will be displayed.

Step 6: Remember to click the Save button or your registration will not be successful.

Once you have clicked ‘Save’, the link between your Pure and ORCID accounts will have been created.

If you had any difficulty following this section, you may already have an ORCID; continue reading to try linking it to your Pure account.
