Introduction to Design

Everything we see around us all are designs either in the form of physical products such as laptop, car, pen etc, or may be an android app or website but do we ever stop and give it a thought that what really a design is? So, here we are, a Design is a term that is pretty hard to explain with a definition we just cannot limit a design within few lines.

Design is not a new concept, it’s been there for long. If we talk about the first design that a human made it were the tools from the stone age, then wheel and goes on. Referring to this chronological order we can conclude that initially, a design was something that solely had a purpose like the tools and wheels. But as we evolved we included art to it, for instance, we added colour, patterns, and shapes to our design and now art has become a permanent part of the design. That is why we always go for something pleasing to eyes and at the same time it should be efficient. For instance, a nice-looking car with good mechanical features.

So, what Design really is?

In my opinion, design lies somewhere between art and engineering. First, we need to understand what is the purpose of art and engineering. So, Art is a medium to share our thoughts and ideas creatively and the purpose of engineering is to make things work in an effective manner. And if something is efficient and at the same time pleasing to eyes, that’s Design for you.

Role of Designers

When there is a need to fill the void between art and engineering, then designers come into the picture. There are certain principles given by Deiter Rames which a designer should always consider.

Now, Let’s understand through some real-life examples what’s good or a bad design really is and how can someone differentiate between them.

THE GOOD DESIGNS

Having a big-screen smartphone is cool but operating it with one hand is a bit difficult. So, designers made it easy for you. They just place the navigation button somewhere in middle now you can toggle around these buttons with one hand only.

Any girl can relate to this, all packaging is done but where to place this “L” shaped hair dryer, here just by adding a hinge in a dryer makes it easy to carry and easy to place where ever you want.

Now no need to pay extra for your mobile camera protection along with a mobile cover. This mobile cover gives you extra camera protection. A simple bump design to your mobile cover saves your camera and money.

Here the designers did it so smartly, just by looking at ticks and their colour you get to know about whether the message is sent, delivered, or seen. The designer encapsulates this information in ticks only. Isn’t it so cool?

Thank GOD, payment is successfully done, that satisfying moment when you see the green colour on your phone after placing a payment. Here designers did it intentionally, as the green colour gives you positive confirmation feedback. Just recall that red colour screen on your failed transaction, quite irritating isn’t it?

THE BAD DESIGNS

Mobile phone holds horizontally with earphone on

Firstly, it becomes quite difficult to use our phone horizontally with these straight earphone jacks or the charger cables on, and secondly, over a period of time wire comes out from the cable at the point of joint. Some smartphone companies changed it to ‘L’ Shape so, that users can able to use smartphones in any direction and it also makes the cable durable.

It is kind a freak-out situation for a JIO app user after opening this app, there is so much data on a screen at one time that a user cannot figure out what to do or what to not.

Weights in gym

The above two weights are similar but it requires two hands to hold the weight at left in the above pic and only one hand to carry the similar weight at the right in the above pic, a simple change in a design makes a weight easy to carry.

Sim ejector pins

What if you lost these sim ejector pins that is very often to happen, in that scenario, you can’t eject your sim out. I personally find it a pretty bad design. Smartphone designers should consider this problem as well.

Look at this beautiful curve edge it looks so mesmerizing but unfortunately, it is a bad design, Wonder why? Let me explain, Design is not about to look good its primary goal is to make the device efficient and here this particular edge doesn’t add any functionality to the device moreover it makes it costlier hence it comes under bad design.

I hope this article made you understand what’s a good or a bad design really is.
