In the late 1990s, the internet was rapidly expanding, but finding relevant information was like finding a needle in a digital haystack. Enter Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Ph.D. students at Stanford University. While they had broad interests in computer science, they honed in on a specialized area: understanding the structure of the web through link analysis.

Page’s fascination began with an exploration of the idea of “backlinks” to determine a website’s relevance. This was the kernel of what would become PageRank, the algorithm named after him. Instead of simply counting the number of times a search term appeared on a page, as many search engines did at the time, PageRank evaluated the relevance and importance of web pages based on the number and quality of links pointing to them.

Sergey Brin joined Page in this endeavor, and the duo’s specialized knowledge in mathematical algorithms and data mining began to shine. Together, they realized that they could create a superior search engine by leveraging their new approach.

Despite their groundbreaking work, initial fundraising was tough. Still, their specialized knowledge gave them an edge. They built a search engine prototype in their dorm rooms, and soon, “Google” (a play on the word “googol”, representing a 1 followed by 100 zeros) began delivering more relevant search results than established competitors.

As their user base grew, so did the attention from investors. Their unique, specialized approach to search drew interest from the likes of Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, who famously wrote them a check for $100,000 even before Google was officially a company.

Today, Google is more than a search engine; it’s a tech giant shaping the digital world. But at its core, it was the specialized knowledge of Page and Brin, applied to a burgeoning internet, that laid the foundation for its unmatched success.
