Perspectives: Wisdom from Graduation Speeches

Every year during college graduation season prominent people from different walks of life are invited by colleges for graduation speeches. Most speeches are quite interesting but a few stand out such as the one by Janet Yellen, Chair of the board of the governors of the Federal Reserve, at NYU in spring of 2014. “ You won’t succeed all the time” said Yellen. “ Finding the right path in life, more often than not, involves some missteps.” Describing work her colleagues did to contain financial crisis, she said “some of their efforts didn’t work but they didn’t give up”. The experience taught Yellen that one’s response to the inevitable setbacks matters as much as the balance of victories and defeats.
