Children Belong to God
Friend,
Your heart is broken. And your heart is also full. Full because you and your lovely wife Laura are surrounded by the people that you love, and the people who love your son, Sergio. He saw your hearts and gave you love, too. And you are the beneficiaries of his courage and strength. But you’ve had your faith tested as well:you are right to grieve for the loss of him. And you are justified in your anger. And your outrage. And your heartache. Losing little Sergio is indeed a great tragedy, but a greater tragedy would’ve been never to have known his courage, strength, and love at all.
We think that our children belong to us. But the truth is, friend, children belong to God. Their souls are given into our care for a time. A precious time. It’s a blessing, every day, every moment we have to love our children. It’s a great gift and a great blessing. Your son is God’s great gift to you and Laura.
Next time, friend, please look at the shooting stars. You’ll feel closer to your lovely wife and to him than you’d ever thought possible: “When he shall die, take him and cut him out in little stars and he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun.” (Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet)
Your son knows the stars better than we do.
