What I look for in new hires?
As a leader in a start-up, I am always looking for smart people to join us. We know that our success will depend a lot on the early set of employees who join us & they will more or less define our culture. The smaller we are , the more important any hire is.
Hiring is possibly the most important & the most challenging activity at any start-up and a great deal of effort has to be made to hire the right fits. Some of the qualities I look for in people are below and in order of importance to me.
“The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.”
A person can have all the creativity & the intelligence in the world, but without integrity & authenticity, he is no fit for a team. Co-workers & customers both love forthright, open people.
Joyful & jovial
“The most important thing is to enjoy your life — to be happy — it’s all that matters.”
I have always enjoyed working with fun loving, positive individuals who can tackle any challenge without getting discouraged about anything. Happiness is a great virtue and happy people in the team can really help maintain a great work environment
Passion & confidence
People who are passionate never work a day in their life
For some people, money is a great motivator, but for others, it’s the passion that drives, the innate desire to perform & grow professionally. Passionate, confident people want ‘to get things done’ & are motivated and hard working.
Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.
A person who is ready to learn new things & wants to keep himself / herself busy all the time is great to have on a team. Normally they challenge you by completing all the tasks given to them quickly and seek your feedback or maybe ask for what next to do.
Skill, Intelligence, Flexibility & creativity
Creativity takes courage.
No doubt, the person has to be skilled at whatever task he is chosen for & intelligence is a foundation for success. But in a start-up, people always have to be flexible to do things that are unanticipated. Some people tackle problems with creativity and that is an added plus.
There are many more qualities and umpteen numbers of blogs / articles about the same. But some of the qualities mentioned above are very important to me when I hire. What are yours?
