Marshall (Mike) S. Smith is a Visiting Scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. During its first two years he served in the Obama administration as the Senior Counselor to the Secretary of Education and Director of International Affairs. From 2001–2009 he directed the Education Program at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. While Education Director at Hewlett Foundation, Mike advanced the field of open education resources (OER) further than anyone on the planet.
Prior to that, in the Clinton Administration, he was the undersecretary of education for seven years, responsible for all policy and budget matters, and for four of those years also the acting deputy secretary, the second ranked person in the US Department of Education. During the Carter administration, he served as the chief of staff to the first secretary for education and assistant commissioner for policy studies in the Office of Education. In the Ford administration he was the director of policy and budget for the National Institute of Education. While not in government, he was at different times an associate professor at Harvard and a professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and at Stanford. At Stanford, he was also the dean of the School of Education.
Smith is an elected member of the National Academy of Education and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Associate Dean and Senior Strategic Advisor, Digital Learning, MIT
Vijay Kumar provides leadership for sustainable technology-enabled educational innovation at MIT. He leads Strategic Educational Initiatives for Digital Learning at MIT that support MIT’s engagement in transforming education at scale through technology. Vijay was the Principal Investigator of O.K.I (Open Knowledge Initiative), an MIT-led collaborative project to develop an open architecture for enterprise educational applications.
Vijay is a member of the Advisory Committee of MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW). He is the Executive officer for MIT’s Council on Educational Technology. He was a member of the steering committee for I-Campus, the MIT-Microsoft Alliance initiative for educational technology. He is also co-PI of an NSF supported MIT initiative for capacity building in STEM education in Haiti through educational technology and open resources.Vijay’s research and advisory engagements include serving as Trustee of EDC, an international educational development organization, as advisor to India’s National Knowledge Commission, and to UNESCO on their strategy for open educational resources. Vijay was awarded the Exxon Mobil Distinguished Chair for technology enabled learning at the University of Qatar. Vijay is a co-editor of a Carnegie Foundation book “Opening Up Education” (MIT Press, August 2008).
