Q&A: Venture capitalist focuses on Houston’s strength as a tech center — Link

- The Houston Chronicle’s Lydia DePillis

I’ve known Blair since we first met at the grand opening of the Houston Technology Center back in 1999. This was when the carpet wasn’t even put down yet and John Beddow, the brand new at the time publisher of the Houston Business Journal introduced Paul Frisson as HTC’s first Executive Director.

There is no one person that better exemplifies both the motivation and ability to make a meaningful change in the Houston startup scene. Blair has been working tirelessly behind the scenes for years and has now finally been able to say (and do) the things publicly that many of us have known for a long time. I absolutely support the Innovation Initiative that the GHP and the Mayors office have launched with Blair at the helm. I just hope that more like-minded people rally to the cause because he can’t do it alone.

This his best quote of the article, and a sentiment that I’ve shared for some time.

“You need to make room for all comers. And you need to let the market, the entrepreneurs, decide where they find value and where they don’t. For years, Houston has allowed organizations to exist because they exist. When startups are no longer needed because the market says we don’t need your product, they go away. Why shouldn’t startup development organizations go the same way?”
