Dallas-area startup investor arrested, accused of attacking wife with hammer — Link

- Dallas Morning News’ Melissa Repko

I’ve never met Stephen Hays in person and my online interactions with him have been cordial in the past, but I simply can’t allow someone with this kind of history and obvious issues to taint the Texas investment community without saying something. To be fair, in admittedly salacious stories like this one, the accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. That said, the circumstances in this case look extraordinarily bad especially considering past behavior and his apology.

His firm, Deep Space Ventures (offline as of publishing) has been a prolific investor here in Texas. Because of the latest news, some companies are already taking steps to distance themselves from his investments in their startups and I’m sure that more will follow suit.

I’ve had several conversations over the last two years with people from Dallas specifically stating that they would never work with this person and gave me first-hand accounts of actions and behavior that ranged from questionable to downright suspect.

None of this is good news, for himself, his firm, his investments, the Dallas and Texas startup community and most importantly, the alleged victim here — his wife and by extension their daughter. We need to call this kind of thing out and Joshua Baer did exactly that in the following statement to Danielle Abril at the Dallas Observer:

Anytime there is a negative incident involving high-profile members of the community, it can reflect poorly on everyone,” he said. “The startup community is already working to overcome a frat-boy culture perception, and this won’t help. Hopefully this will be the last incident like this for Stephen and for the Dallas startup community.” — Joshua Baer — Link
