If I read the materials right, it can’t be proven that it was Ross Ulbricht who ordered the hit.
There is a data trail when a bitcoin transaction happens. It records sender, recipient and amount. But to pinpoint ownership is more difficult. If a wallet with that particular bitcoin address is found on my phone or laptop, then we have proof. If the bitcoin address sends funds to an exchange address via which it is transferred to Dollars, than it can be traced. But there are ways to obscure the trail (called a mixer). Or you buy a secure privacy coin like monero, send to one more monero address and then back to a second bitcoin address and then the trail is broken. The trail is only there if the culprit is not smart enough.
