We have to remember that AR had been around for years before the boom of Pokemon Go.

That’s certainly true, though the Yelp feature is really rudimentary AR, and it didn’t have nearly the effect that Pokemon Go did (admittedly PokeGo’s AR is also meh). VR has been around for awhile too — Disney had VR rides as early as 1994 — but never on a large scale, and it’s taken a long time to get to the point where we can put AR/VR at the core of a major consumer product, rather than just making it an Easter egg like Yelp did. That’s the difference, I would argue.
