Canada had plenty of Scots settling here — esp. the Maritime provinces (includes Newfoundland). But we weren’t and aren’t subjected to the continual propaganda that ‘government is the problem’. Some of us are aware that government can be a counterweight to corporations and their profit driven ethos.

Many of us know that government can do things to improve peoples’ lives if the will is there. Yes, the cost is sometimes — perhaps often — more than the taxes that are gathered from the area where the improvement is made. But many Canadians accept that is part of the cost for our society and the one we want to build. Many understand that sharing means that sometimes we pay more than the services we get because we’ve decided that we want a civil and co-operative society.
