Did you know that the first Sunday of every month The Boca Raton Art Museum waives its admission? Why not visit the Boca Raton Art Museum? The Boca Raton Art Museum is located in the heart of Boca Raton at Mizner Park. It consists of 44,000 square foot facility. The museum has a permanent collection of 4, 500 pieces that rotates frequently. The works include modern and contemporary pieces, American and European art focusing on early 20th century modernism, African and Pre-Columbian objects as well as over 1,500 photographic images. In addition to the permanent collection, exhibitions are continually brought in.
The Museum has a separate location for its Art School on Palmetto Park Road near the historic community of Old Floresta. The art school includes eight classrooms as well as a faculty and student exhibition gallery. There are over 100 weekly classes taught for all age groups and skill sets.
Lastly, the Boca Raton Museum of Art has is an auxiliary location for the Artist’ Guild located in nearby by Delray Beach. The Artists’ Guild sponsors over 20 juried exhibitions of original fine art.
History of Boca Raton Art Museum
The concept of the museum sprouted in the 1940’s when Boca Raton’s first organization, the civic club decided it was time to build a small library. The two Boca Raton residents that organized the first Library, Roberta MacSpadden and Hildegarde Schine decorated the Town Hall where the Library Open House took place, with art work from galleries in Palm Beach and Miami and from friends’ collections. The idea was such a hit that they immediately decided that in addition to a library, there was a need to start an art guild. By 1950 Boca Raton’s Art Guild was born.
By 1962, the Art Guild had its own dedicated building showcasing art and teaching art. The building, still in use today but now strictly housing the art school portion of museum, can be seen off of Palmetto Park Road as you enter the historic Old Floresta area. The building went through several expansions before deciding to move collection portion of the museum to the prominent location at Mizner Park in 2001.
