The Poké Company Brings a Hawaiian Delicacy to Boca Raton

No need to make a trip to Fort Lauderdale or Miami just for a poke bowl. Boca Raton now has its own fast-casual poke restaurant in The Poke Company.

The location, at 555 North Federal Highway just across from Mizner Park, opened in March and offers fresh, simple, delicious seafood arranged so beautifully that you might sign up for Instagram just to share a picture of your food.

What is poke?

Poke (rhymes with okay) is a simple but classic raw-fish staple in Hawaii. It has been one of the hottest culinary trends in California and has made its way to South Florida. Traditionally, the dish features marinated raw fish (salmon, tuna, etc.) over a bed of rice with complementary toppings. In specialty shops along the East and West coasts, poke has been transformed in countless ways with unusual toppings, bases, and sauces.

You might have had poke as an appetizer or specialty at other seafood restaurants here in Boca, but the poke bowl transforms the dish into an entree that is light, filling, and healthy. The key to a great experience is in the freshness of the fish and the pairing of the toppings.

Why you should try The Poké Company

If you’re craving fresh fish but want to mix up your standard sushi choices, The Poké Company provides an excellent option. They attempt to keep the process, the vibe, and the food simple but never bland. The restaurant promises “to use super-top quality, responsibly sourced fish — we’re really into that.”

If you’ve never had a poké bowl, or any form of the dish, you don’t need to be intimidated by the new experience. The staff at The Poké Company are some of the friendliest around, and they will be more than happy to explain the process and help you through any choices. They will also provide samples to help you make the best decision in making your own bowl.

What you can expect

Simplicity with options. At its heart, the poké bowl experience is choosing a size (regular or large), a base (white or brown rice, kale, or cauliflower rice), and a protein (ahi tuna, Scottish salmon, spicy tuna, steamed shrimp, or tofu).

But then there are the mix-ins, toppings, and sauces.

The Poké Company gives diners a wide selection, allowing you to create a custom flavor profile. Free options include mixins like cucumber, sweet onion, or cilantro, and toppings like scallions, sesame seeds, or pickled ginger, just to name a few. There are also a variety of sauces that range from mild to spicy. Premium extras like avocado or seaweed are also available for a fee.

If that all sounds a bit overwhelming, the restaurant offers signature dishes to guarantee that all the flavors will blend together nicely. These include:

  • The Heavy Squall: Ahi Tuna & Salmon, Edamame, Hijiki, Seaweed, The Company Sauce, Scallions, Sesame Seeds
  • The Hot One: Salmon, Jalapeño Pepper, Cucumber, Sweet Onion, Cilantro, Citrus Ponzu, Wonton Chips, Spicy Mayo
  • The O.G.: Ahi Tuna, Sweet Onion, Hijiki Seaweed, Sesame Shoyu, Sesame Seeds
  • Too Much Tuna: Ahi Tuna & Spicy Tuna, Cucumber, Edamame, The Company Sauce
  • The Veggie Move: Tofu, Avocado, Edamame, Cucumber, The Company Sauce, Scallions, Sesame Seeds, Pickled Ginger

You won’t find a large selection of sides, just Seaweed Salad and Krab Salad, but they pair well with the entrees. And there are vegetarian options as well. Drink choices include Natural Fountain Soda, Bottled Water, Boba (Bubble Tea), Iced Tea, and Iced Tea with Boba.

While the inside of the restaurant is not large, it does provide ample seating. Plus, many patrons take their dishes to go. The bowls are convenient for picking up a quick bite to take back to the office or down to the beach.

And with bowls starting at under twelve dollars, The Poké Company is an affordable option for a healthy lunch or dinner.

Takeaway

Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a raw fish beginner, the poké bowl is a great way to get your fix for the freshest seafood. The trend continues to pick up steam here in South Florida, so don’t be surprised to find more locations focused on the poké bowl.
