It depends on your objective. In our case we wanted to verify a user has access to the email address in which case an SMS wouldn’t do us much good. We don’t have or need the user’s telephone number.

I imagine in some cases though, especially on mobile, using SMS verification to ‘verify’ someone’s identity can be a better alternative.
