Thoughts on: Destroying your own ideas

Keep challenging your ideas to see if they’re correct. It’s important to not get too comfortable with them, because that doesn’t really help us grow.

I’ve read that habits are like trees. The longer we hold on to a habit, the deeper its roots go. It’s much easier to uproot a tree that’s had a couple of weeks to grow than a tree that’s been growing for years and years. Imagine having to uproot a tree that’s a couple of times your size. The same can be said for ideas, I think, which is why I believe it’s important to challenge them often. The only trees with long roots that we want are the ideas that have withstood the challenges time and time again.

If we have a certain opinion on a specific subject, we should do research as if we had the opposing opinion. If we were to debate about our stance on the matter, we should be able to argue for and against it. This will force us to truly look at both sides in detail and then, with all the information, make a decision as to where we stand.

Let’s not pursue attachment to ideas; let’s pursue truth.

Anyway, I’d been thinking about this for a while. What do you think about this? Let me know!

The comic for this thought is here!
