Install TOPO Maps on Garmin 530

My last purchase of a Gamin device (i66) I bought this device in the USA and it did not include the NZ Topo maps. I struggled to find suitable maps for NZ from http://www.gmaptool.eu/ and ended up purchasing the maps from Garmin to save what I thought might be hours for a sub optimum mapping solution.

I forked out the $229 later I was able to buy the map and load it into Garmin connect and then onto the device.

Now a few years later I have a new Device. A Garmin 530. Again — no maps for NZ. So I try to load my previously purchased maps. Well this appears as if the expensive map is not transferable to a new device. I own these maps I was shocked that I could not transfer them.

I am also not excited about spending another $229 to enable maps on my new device so this time persevered to install free maps.

To install the Maps ended up being incredibly simple once I found a suitable source for the maps.

Step 1. Go to https://garmin.opentopomap.org/#australia_oceania

Step 2. Download map and contour map and unzip these files

Step 3. Connect Garmin — copy the two files into the root folder (YES THAT IS CORRECT) of the Garmin device
