I am intrigued by all the techniques I read suggesting how to grab readers by the eyeballs. As a new Medium member I have yet to see the technique you describe in an article (thankfully) but for sure I would immediately bail. On the other hand aren't we all guilty at least sometimes, of scanning an article like "5 ways to get 10,000 readers overnight" to the actual list of 5 ways and ignoring the rest?
