I thought that I would have to put aside W&P once again as I delve deeply into Wagner’s Parsifal which I will see on August 9. Is it an opera about Buddhist compassion? Or is it really about male fear of castration? Parsifal, like Siegfried, is an apparent simpleton representing goodness who sees through Kundry’s wiles. Could this also be like the character of Pierre who, while somewhat fuzzy of thought, has an instinctive moral sense?
