…ff by hedge funds. A psyche will simply crack, and flee for safety into the arms of authoritarians. Democracy isn’t exactly giving you a good life — only one full of misery, despair, rage, and resentment. Maybe that authoritarian, who makes you feel optimistic again, can do better.

But liberals and progressives will have none of it — they would rather people work in dead-end gigs forever no good reason, to make hedge-fund shareholders rich, than to built a stable middle class again, by sharing the fruits of an abundant social product. But such people, trapped in lives of precarity and despair, are likely to keep on turning en masse to authoritarians, who can at least sympathize with their rage and resentment — and deftly project it onto scapegoats. The price of a feeling of safety is often, as history teaches us, the end of democracy.
