Yea I hear you! I just completed several rounds of interviews for a senior position in Engineering at Tesla in Palo Alto. The recruiter (a senior Tesla employee) said how much Telsa likes people like me who are really passionate about the environmental issues (i wrote a Kindle book on electric cars, did environmental lobbying on my own nickel, am involved in activists groups) and had the engineering experience in spades.
After several rounds of interviews, how much did the various people I spoke with care about the environmental issues? Not one iota! They literally couldn’t care less. Even when I asked them about employees involvement with environmental issues they looked me like I was asking them about porn or something else equally irrelevant. (I guess the recruiter was out of touch)
They were tech bros all the way. I was dumbfounded. They ended up hiring a guy from Apple (I was unofficially told that they are poaching Apple’s electric car group), that was way more important to them.
I still don’t doubt Elon’s commitment, but he has an army of worker ants doing his bidding. (All of them one-upping each other to hit that magic 130 hour work week contributing to twisted values and probably hubris)
Yuck! I decided to do another startup doing something I care about instead of working for this Decade's version of Wall Street a-hole bros!
