The Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies have won the World Series; we are the champions, YEA! Ho Hum. I am not a sports fan. I don’t get sports fans. That being said, there is something about baseball. And, since Philadelphia is my hometown, the Phillies are my designated team.

One thing I’ll give the Phillies — they wear smart looking uniforms. They run onto the field looking like a bunch of peppermint sticks; fresh and clean with an old-timey charm. I don’t know if other teams wear the same vintage style garb, but I’m glad that the Phil’s do. Some other things I like about my home team: Mike Schmidt running the bases in dreadlocks, Tug McGraw, the name alone still makes me smile, oh, and an opening day when Bill Giles hired Kiteman’s imposter to almost glide onto centerfield.

What endear the Phillies to me most though are the memories of listening to games on the radio. Although I am not a sports fan, I am a huge fan of radio. Radios are filled with magic places. I remember winding along a crowded beach, inching in between blankets, hearing Phillies on the radio; riding in the big Buick with my Pop-Pop — Phillies on the radio; sitting on the front porch with my dad — Phillies on the radio; lying in bed with a lover on a Saturday night — Phillies on the radio. Just listening to the play by play, the quiet conversation of the commentators; the singular sound of wood on leather and a shout “It’s outta here!” transported me to another place and time.

Do they still play Phillies games on the radio? Maybe I’ll check one out next season.
