The impact of Javascript Frameworks on the future of desktop development

In this article I want to explain the impact of modern javascript frameworks on the future of desktop development. I am a full stack developer with many years of experience in native & web development.

Because of HTML5 and Javascript (including Javascript Frameworks) you have so much possibilitys offered that before were only offered by languages like .NET / Java / etc.

In the beginning of 2015 Node.js had their first release — an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript run-time environment that executes JavaScript code outside of a browser. Now you can do much more with JavaScript than just making websites interactive.

Package Managers

Nowadays as a developer you don’t develop just with writing code. There are so many packages and dependencys you can/have toinclude into your project, doing much work for you — thanks to open source!

Package Managers are essentially a way to automate the process of installing, upgrading, configuring or removing software.

The game changer: Javascript Frameworks

The importance of Javascript Frameworks rises sharply. A few years ago JQuery was the first choice if you wanted to develop interactive web applications.

Nowadays JQuery is not you first choice when developing interactive web appclication!

Most modern webpages use Javascript frameworks like Vue.js, Angular or React. There is a good article about those 3 frameworks:

Electron: Cross Platform Desktop Apps

Electron is a framework that combines Node.js, parts of Chromium, and a layer of native code. With Electron you can build web based desktop applications. Popular examples are:

  • Skype
  • GitHub Desktop
  • Discord
  • Slack
  • Atom

Through Electron even people without deep programming skills are able to develop their own desktop applications — just with webdev!

Web based applications are the future of desktop/app development! More and more people get into webdev because it is so easy to understand and to develop.

Don’t forget to clap 👏 if you like this article.
