In addition, I would like to point out that Tesla describes its autonomous driving system as being in “beta” and directs drivers to remain alert, with their hands on the wheel and ready to take over at any time. Whether or not the statistics will hold for semi-autonomous (such as Tesla) and fully-autonomous vehicles remains to be seen, but in general, the safety performance of new transportation technology is at its worst at the beginning of its history, not after 150 years of development. (Look at the history of aviation accidents, for example.)
And speaking of aviation, as a traveler, I’m sure you are aware that most of your commercial flights are piloted autonomously, with human pilots taking over for about 3 to 7 minutes per flight.
