Wow, I love this. We humans are terrible at math — and not really so great at high-speed processing of multivariate problems, either. I’ll take the asymptotic approach to perfection any day.

I think a lot of the uninformed concern about autonomous vehicles comes from the natural human desire to cling to our illusion of control. After all, the reason people are more afraid to fly than drive is that they aren’t behind the wheel, not because the plane operates on autopilot most of the time — and certainly not because it is statistically safer.
