I made that switch to a 5AM wakeup on weekdays in 2012 and haven’t looked back after that. One of the best feelings I have is to OWN the morning — the first 2–3 hours after I wake up I am pretty much in control to do what I want to do (still I have it all quite well planned — coffee, pooping, training, focussed work). And when at 9AM I look back at the last few hours I am incredibly proud of the things I have achieved for these extra 3–4 hours.
A lot of this is psychological and I follow a pretty similar schedule even if I don’t wake up at 5. But the impression this early waking up does is that of doing more with my time.
Good piece :)
