Well, I have a problem with the general idea of the ‘lone mad genius’ too but I don’t think the film is saying that. Wilson is at his creative best when he is least mad and deteriorates to the point of incoherence and catatonia as he withdraws into paranoia. That said, Wilson does ‘hear voices in his head that nobody else is hearing’, from that extraordinary opening shot onwards. His audio hallucinations are well documented their use in the film is quite specific and particular, rather than mythic.
