Solo Traveling Was The Death of Me

You’ve had a couple of glasses of wine. Inspiration kicks in. You book tickets to Málaga, Spain, for the following week. That’s how I ended up solo traveling in Málaga… and I’ve never made a better drunk decision!

A couple of months later, I found myself on a 3-week solo trip through Scandinavia, not knowing I was about to find the most unexpected thing there: MY DEATH.

“Death was just the beginning of a journey that everyone took at some point.” — Melissa de la Cruz

I got an Interrail pass for 10 travel days spread across 3 weeks, and started my journey as follows:

Amsterdam, Netherlands — Hamburg, Germany — Copenhagen, Denmark Gothenburg, Sweden — Oslo, Norway — Bergen, Norway — Flåm, Norway — Stockholm, Sweden — Copenhagen & Hamburg (again) — Prague, Czech Republic — Sofia, Bulgaria — Amsterdam, Netherlands.

It’s so impressive how much a person can change in 23 days. How a person’s ego can “die” in 23 days… Here’s an outline of the “ego death” process that my solo traveling unleashed unapologetically:

  • Day 1: EXCITEMENT
  • Days 2–4: ANXIETY
  • Days 5–6: FREEDOM
  • Days 7–9: EGO DEATH
  • Days 10–11: MOURNING MYSELF
  • Days 12–13: REBIRTH
