When characters are trapped behind closed doors!

Running out of ideas of what to do during a lockdown? Movies are the perfect go-to then, especially when we can’t get out… unless the characters are trapped inside a closed space! Hello, claustrophobia!

But huis-clos movies often have intense scenarios and create a very interesting dynamic between the characters who are forced to stay together in an enclosed space… feeling familiar? :D

Here is a list of 5 of my favorite huis-clos movies. Different genres, different times… here we go!

8 Women

8 Women — François Ozon (2002)

Genre: dark comedy musical film

Running time: 1h50

A quirky atmosphere but so endearing! A mixture of comedy, drama, singing, and dancing that supports a murder-mystery story. Based on a play with the same name, this film features 8 women with different and complex personalities who are forced to solve a crime that took place in the huge country house where the entire story is played out. The story is supported by a fabulous cast of famous french actresses (Catherine Deneuve, Fanny Ardant, Isabelle Huppert…). This film isn’t the most recent, yet it hasn’t lost its power. …

What I’ve learned after rejecting an incredible person

Breaking up is painful as hell.

Research shows that it activates the same part of the brain as the one responsible for physical pain. A lot of articles were published online about how to deal with a broken heart after being rejected. But what about the pain that comes with rejecting someone?

This recently happened to me. I met someone great a few weeks ago, a beautiful person inside and out. We were having a nice time and despite all his qualities, and charms, and the fact that we had a beautiful connection and were getting along so well, something didn’t click on my side. My intuition was telling me “he isn’t right for you”. So I decided to let him go because it’s unfair to lead someone on when you know that you don’t have the spark. …

How to know if you’re falling in love with your new date

You want to build a committed relationship and you’ve just met someone new. You’re dating, it’s nice, however, you’re not really sure how you feel about them and whether they’re worth pursuing. Some might think that this uncertainty is already a sure sign that the magic isn’t there. But experience has shown me that feelings are complex and that there are many reasons why it’s not always obvious that we really like someone and whether it’s worth giving them a chance.

It might be that you have been hurt in the past and you don’t want to open your heart again too soon. You feel disconnected to your emotions as a way of protecting yourself and you’re not sure about how your date makes you feel. Or, it could be that you don’t know how to read your own emotions because you’re not used to it. …

The one key to unlocking your creativity

You believe you’re not creative. As a Drama Teacher, I hear this statement all the time amongst my students: “I’m not a creative person”. I’ve always thought that it wasn’t true, no matter who the person is. Here’s why.

Where is that statement “I’m not creative” taking you? How can we challenge that statement so that it becomes a starting point and not an end in itself?

The first question to ask yourself is why do you believe you’re not creative? Have you had bad experiences in the past and someone told you that what you created wasn’t good enough? …

And it’s not what you think

Another year over, and you’re still in the same boring, uninspiring job.

You wake up in the morning with zero motivation. Maybe you’ve simply accepted that’s how life is: you can’t have fun all the time. You think that work is just a plain obligation so you can eat and pay your bills. And that not everyone can afford to be happy at work or live off their passion, provided we all have one…

You feel lost and disappointed. But at least, you’re surviving.

Yet deep down, you just feel that things could be different. You want to believe that you can find work that makes more sense to you or a project that sparks the light in you, even if you’re unsure where to start. …

What’s in Santa’s bag? You choose!

Someone starts with “In Santa’s bag, there is …” and adds an idea, an object, an action, a place… whatever they want! A trip to a desert island, my grandmother’s glasses, chocolate with dried blueberries on it… the more specific, the more difficult it gets! The next person must repeat everything that was said before… and add a new idea! …
