I’ve never unfriended or been unfriended so much in the history of my FB life. Maybe it’s because I was sick with Covid-19 symptoms and waited impatiently for 8 days to get the test results, maybe it’s because I now know 3 people who have died of the virus, maybe because I am stunned at the level of denial or “fork you” reactions of so called “friends” in my social media network, maybe because I’m embarrassed at the fact that our country is one of only a few where Covid-19 numbers are rising, maybe because of the tweet “if we stop testing the numbers will go down”, maybe because the county where I raised my daughters is constantly in the world news for flipping off safety measures…for any and all of those reasons, I am sadly astonishingly amazed at what is going around right now.
That women health officials like Dr. Amy Acton are sued and ridiculed for trying to keep her constituents safe, that government officials are being pressured into changing their guidelines, that people are calling Covid-19 a marketing ploy and posting that under my friend’s post who just lost her brother to Covid…and getting unfriended because someone was posting misinformation from OSHA and I pointed it out...I’m going to have to go back and read my own article “Is the World going to Hell in a Handbasket” and give it an extra clap!
So the good news is, as an organizational psychologist I do know what is happening. I may not like it, but I understand it. There’s a psychological phenomena called “Groupthink” where a group of people believe in something so strongly that no amount of empirical data can shake them from their BS/Bullshit/Belief System. So something like the conspiracy theory that Covid-19 is a huge ploy by the government/China/? to keep us in fear and in restraints and so the numbers are inflated, and it’s a big marketing ploy yada yada yada is continuously shouted from the social media rooftops. If you hold the BS that government shouldn’t be involved in your personal freedoms, then that BS is even stronger. And there’s no amount of valid empirical data that can pierce that strongly held BS Belief System…NOTHING YOU SAY OR SHOW OR PRESENT makes a difference. People will STUBBORNLY hold onto that BS and tell you that you are in MSU University, Making Shit Up. I do have to say that the CDC admitting that they inflated numbers doesn’t help…but people usually don’t apologize for things they are in conspiracy for. Just sayin’.

I will probably be unfriended for this which is actually good news cause I’ve had a waiting list because of the 5000 FB friend limit and I haven’t wanted to kill anyone off. But if you want to be removed, just go ahead and post that you’re glad to see people without a face-mask, that people dying of Covid isn’t really a big deal or a marketing ploy or that #blacklivesmatter is a scam.
On my “Not Black and White” show last Tuesday, my guest Actress and Activist Akuyoe Graham gave me permission to say “I love you and goodbye” so I am practicing my new “Unfriend with Love” #blissipline. It is unfortunate that both viruses, Covid and Racism seems to be dividing us even more, but I am not going to Groupthink that BS…I am going to Focus on the fact that we are HumanKIND and sometimes we have to stand up with Love because if we don’t, the loud minority gets the attention and sways those who are on the fence. And what we Permit we Promote. I am no longer going to Permit your “Fork You I don’t need to wear a mask because it’s all bullshit” actions go…because me not wearing a mask won’t hurt you but you not wearing a mask will hurt me. When we are not ALL in this together…it’s like having a Private Peeing Section in a Public Pool.
I really hope that every single person on social media will not post anything about the virus or facemasks without first fact checking, and whether or not you believe that facemasks work or not, have the respect for those who believe they do.
