I was an in-house ghostwriter before I started writing for my freelance clients. Most might not know, but a ghostwriter cannot put the work they do for clients on their portfolio. They are the ghosts hiding behind their clients’ brilliant ideas as they polish, shape, and breathe life into them.

Once the project ends, they go on and about their lives as if they never worked together. It was worse for me because I worked for an agency and never knew my clients and who I was working with, communicating via emails and task management platforms. Sadly, I never got to establish a clientele.

When I relocated to Australia, I chose freelancing because I wanted to be my own boss, take projects I resonated with, and only work on something I felt strongly about — instead of living paycheck to paycheck. Safe to say, I was done letting a third party, my agency earn money from my work, and taking advantage of me as a writer.

“I have always worked for an international clientele. I know how the industry works,” I thought to myself and launched my freelance career the very next day I landed in Australia.
