4 Simple Steps to Make Your Website Accessible
“The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect.” — Tim Berners-Lee
Accessibility (often abbreviated to A11y) in the world wide web means to provide a universally accessible global information system for everyone. Tim Berners-Lee designed it to work for all people, whatever their hardware, software, language, location, or ability.
Web accessibility means that websites, tools, and technologies are designed and developed so that people with disabilities can use them. More specifically, people can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the web.
We often forget that we are “dis-able” or, differently said, “not able” to do things all the time. Have you ever held a baby while navigating the phone? Or, did you take care of your kids while working in the home office? That’s right; you were temporarily or situationally disabled. I highly recommend reading my article We Are All Disabled! to understand why everyone benefits from an accessible worldwide web.
