Here are some great spots in Kerala to surf and have an incredible experience.
- Lighthouse Beach, Kovalam
Named after the old Vizhinjam lighthouse, the lighthouse beach is one of the best beaches in Kerala and is only about a 40-minute drive from Thiruvananthapuram. It would probably be anyone’s primary choice for surfing in Kerala. Usually, the best time considered for surfing is from November until late May. And because of the Kovalam Surf Club, the number of locals taking part in this sport is increasing. Known for its calm and serene environment the Varkala beach is located 51 km north of Trivandrum city. Even though Varkala is popular for its beach, there are other attractions like the 2000-year-old Vishnu temple, the Sivagiri mutt ashram and so on. Varkala offers a good surfing experience since the waves are higher and it is suitable for both amateurs and professionals. Soul & Surf, one of the finest surfing schools in Kerala is located here. 3.Hawah Beach, Kovalam
With its calm blue waters, Eve’s Beach or commonly known as Hawah’s Beach is another stunning beach in Kovalam. The beach is a favourite among visitors to Kerala and is only a few minutes away from Lighthouse beach. The food shacks, cheap stays, laid-back hangouts, beach activities like sunbathing, beach volleyball, boat riding surfing and much more are many of the reason people still prefer this beautiful beach.
About 20 km from Cochin International Airport, Cherai is one of the few places where you can see the perfect mix of sea and backwaters. Known for the sighting of dolphins this beach also offers an escape from the crowded life of the city with its charming coastline, a playground for kids, and a lot of water sports activities including windsurfing and paragliding. Even though there are facilities for windsurfing, surfing would have to solo.
An enchanting destination, Poovar beach is located 12 km from Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram. It’s been getting popular and more visitors over these past few years. The unstretched sands, wobbling coconut palm trees and the natural beauty of this place make it calming and dazzling. It is highly advised to watch out for strong currents here.
