What is Wifi and who invented it?

The term wifi is a marketing term, but it stands for “wireless fidelity”. It describes a technology for radio wireless local area of networking (WLAN) of devices based on the IEEE 802.11 standards such as smartphones, computers etc to exchange data or connect to the internet using radio waves, which are maintained by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It was founded by Dr. O’Sullivan and his colleagues. The first version of the 802.11 protocol was released in back 1997. Wifi is a trademark of the WiFi Alliance.

How Wifi Works

Wifi networks have no physical wired connection between the sender and receiver, the network is established by using Radio Frequency (RF) technology. A frequency within the electromagnetic spectrum associated with radio wave multiplies itself naturally. When an RF current is supplied to an antenna, an electromagnetic field is created that then is able to multiply itself with the help of space naturally. To ensure optimal wifi performance, network administrators mainly rely on wifi analyzers such as NetSpot to visualize, manage and troubleshoot wifi connections.

10 Interesting & Shocking Wifi Facts

1. The term Wi-Fi was invented as a play on words with Hi-Fi or High Fidelity by Interbrand.

2. Today consumers may call “wireless Fidelity” as Wi-Fi, a consumer-friendly name but before this, there were different names for the WiFi like WaveLAN, FrankSpeed, DragonFly, WECA, IEEE802.11b Direct Sequence.

3. Wi-Fi radios make transmission at 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz which allows the signal to carry more data. This frequency is very higher than the frequencies used for cell phones, walkie-talkies, and other devices.

4. As per statista.com, the number of public Wi-Fi hotspots is forecasted to increase by 454 million by 2020. Also, people usually choose funny wifi names as their network names.

5. Wi-Fi is more important at some hotel for the guests than the complimentary breakfast & parking.

6. As per the Wi-Fi Alliance Forecast in 2017 it was predicted that more than 9 billion Wi-Fi enabled devices were expected to be in use and more than 3 billion devices were expected to be shipped at the same year.

7. As per the reports of Cisco, it is believed that by 2020 Wi-Fi and mobile connected devices will generate 78% of all internet traffic.

8. Some of the weirdest Wi-Fi devices which are available for the consumers in the market are walking sticks, umbrellas, t-shirts, water bottles & cutlery.

9. The strangest place on the earth where the Wi-Fi hotspot is installed is Masaya Volcano or ‘The Mouth of Hell’ as it is affectionately known in the parts of Central America.

10. Researchers are installing 80 wireless sensors in the hope that it can predict a Volcanic Eruption.

Wi-Fi has already changed the world so much over the past 3 decades- we look forward to seeing where it will take us next in some upcoming years by this we can also make some of our predictions like what our future could be or how Wi-Fi is going to drive our future.
