An Intimate Moment with a Hummingbird

Sometimes we are too busy capturing moments and not enough time living the moment.

Today I came face to face with a hummingbird. I was busy looking at my phone to see if the picture I took seconds earlier of the hummingbird came out clear. When I looked up from my phone, the hummingbird was no more than 18 inches away from my face. It’s little wings moving in a blur, and it’s little body suspended in the air, while it’s little eyes stared deeply into mine.

It’s little wings moving in a blur, and it’s little body suspended in the air, while it’s little eyes stared deeply into mine.

We held our gaze for 10–15 seconds, then it flew to a nearby flower to feed, and came back for another 10–15 second intimate moment; and repeated that sequence one more time. It felt like an eternity in slow motion.

It felt like an eternity in slow motion.

Though I had my phone in hand, I stood there living the moment and appreciating my new friend. It was staring at me so intently as if it was trying to tell me something.

Perhaps it was saying, ‘thanks for sharing this time with me.’ A reminder to put our phones down an live the moment.

A not so good picture of the hummingbird, before our intimate moment. (hummingbird is the blur to the right of the flowers!)
