My father, who became a white collar with suit and tie in the seventies, often answered the question what he did for a living by saying he worked at Gemeentereiniging Amsterdam (the waste department of the city of Amsterdam). Most people never asked further and that was key for him in knowing what kind of person was asking. ‘I could have been on the board of directors or on the trash truck. Most probably assumed the latter but hardly anyone asked further.’

I’ve been a journalist ánd a courier and loved both jobs for their individual qualities.
