CS373 Fall 2018: Mark Sands

  1. What did you do this past week?

In the last week of lectures we went through what this class entails and how we are going to spend the semester. We were informed about the competitive programming and were advised to go and take part in it when it is on as it is good for our problem solving and programming. It is also very beneficial to us because it will help us if we ever have to do a technical interview. We were told about various tools that could help us when doing our projects such as GitLab and Docker.

2. What’s in your way?

As of yet nothing is really in my way because we haven’t really started the assignments yet but I am struggling to register for Piazza which is a good tool if you have a question for the class. I’m sure that I will have more for this section in next week’s blog when we have done more.

3. What will you do next week?

Next week my goal is to become familiar with GitLab as we were told it is a very useful tool for the assignments. Also I need to refresh myself in Python because I haven’t used it in a while. In the last year of my college all our assignments were in Java so I am a bit rusty.

4. What are your expectations of the class?

My expectations for the class are that it will be challenging but enjoyable. We were told that some of the assignments are going to easier than others so I am expecting that a few of them will be very difficult. We will need a lot of teamwork and communication skills. I enjoy working in groups and also I love challenging myself so I think this class will be very rewarding.

5. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip of the week has to be GitLab. I think this will prove very useful for version control which is very important when you have a lot of members in your group constantly updating and adding things to the project.
