Breaking down in a dodgy part of town…

A wonderful and disturbing story. Wonderful because of the Humanity displayed by both strangers, the police, and even the insurance company! Disturbing because, first, I had no Idea it was soooo dangerous in S.A. which I have visited without the benefit of knowing how dangerous. Second I live in a country that “feels” so much “safer”, yet I would never expect the police or insurance company to EVER display such a concerned approach or make such an effort, I might get lucky and have a stranger stop to ask….directions. The point is i’m living in a Gold Coast waterside community one hour from where I grew up in New York City and here’s what I would expect; the police would treat me as if I was a “perp” and would approach with caution, the insurance company would have cause to raise my rates, and strangers would assume since I had a cell phone I could get all the help I needed without wasting their time. No I’m not cynical and bitter, these are experiences I’ve already had here. So, what kind of society do I live in??? But there is one question I would like the readers to respond to; would the story be the same if it was a man in distress instead of a women?
