“Undivided Unity in Christ Jesus”

Ephesians 4: 4–6
“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

The glorious thought of the redeemed in Christ’s oneness under their head and Bridegroom the Lord Jesus Christ. This unity is not a false unity under the guise of the prevailing philosophy of the last days desiring that all professing religions or denominations join together in unity regardless of doctrinal integrity and the upholding of the biblical gospel of Jesus Christ. There is a false unity that comes from the likes of organizations such as World Council of Churches (WCC) whose stated aim is “to pursue the goal of the visible unity of the Church”. However, it is a false unity because it is a unity at the expense of the absolute truth of the Word of God and the biblical gospel of God’s grace has been diluted or nonexistent even as it may be under the false banner of “All love is love” mantra.

DL Moody was quoted in saying “The best way to show that a stick is crooked is not to argue about it or to spend time denouncing it, but to lay a straight stick alongside it.” So one prominent sign of a true plumb line of biblical unity is one where God’s Word is not compromised nor are the essentials of the biblical gospel. True oneness in Christ and our foundational unity under our Head, Jesus Christ is a common unity we find as being adopted into His fold as His own sheep, the sheep of His pasture and chosen by Him. We may work His good works in Christ in differing pastures, fields in different lands and varying cultures but there is a oneness and a unity based in His perfect love, which drives out all fear, not competing against each other, being divisive or abusing one another and arguing over little trinkets of nonessential doctrines. Jesus truly is building His church through His people of which the gates of hell will not prevail. Hallelujah! His unity in a true biblical love of which the world will peer into and see such a sweet communion in Christ and a divine loving fellowship of a wanting of a horizontal connection with each other. A true being one in the Spirit of Lord where there is true freedom, a good and pleasant brotherly Christ-like love where in the words of Matthew Henry of “delighting in each other with mutual endearments, and promoting each other’s welfare with mutual services” are evident and command His blessings of life forevermore now and our heavenly home where we will dwell together forever in the presence of our Lord Jesus who purchased His Beloved Bride with His precious shed blood.

May Psalm 133 go down deep into our souls in the heart of the blessed unity of God’s people, His last day’s remnant:

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.”

In closing, may the words of the hymn “They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love” be our prayer:

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord; we are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord; And we pray that all unity will one day be restored.

Chorus: And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand; we will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand; and together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land.

We will work with each other, we will work side by side; we will work with each other, we will work side by side; and we’ll guard each man’s dignity and save each man’s pride.

All praise to the Father, from whom all things come; and all praise to Christ Jesus, His only Son. And all praise to the Spirit who makes us one.”
