Social Video — TL;DR

Because it’s something I seem to follow heavily, then maybe I should turn this into some sort of series.

Viewers don’t mean profit for Google’s YouTube

TL;DR… Even with all those users, videos and advertisers, YouTube is not making money. It’s just breaking even…

“The results reflect YouTube’s struggles to expand its core audience beyond teens and tweens. Most YouTube users treat the site as a video repository to be accessed from links or embedded video players posted elsewhere, rather visiting YouTube.com daily. Google executives want them to turn on YouTube the way they turn on television, as a habit, where they can expect to find different “channels” of entertainment.”
“9% of viewers account for 85% of online-video views.”
“New challengers also add urgency to her task. Facebook and Twitter Inc., which routinely send traffic to YouTube, are building their own video offerings. Facebook, and startups such as Vessel, are trying to poach YouTube stars. Meanwhile, Amazon.com Inc. and Netflix Inc. are changing the image of “online video” by licensing Hollywood-produced content and creating original programming.”

There Are Only A Few, But Here’s How Early Adopters Are Using Twitter Video

TL;DR… The best examples that have come out so far have been almost Q&A format. For example Medium did this silly answer to a silly question — https://twitter.com/Medium/status/565304286842986497

Gary Vaynerchuck said:

“It takes me nine to twelve seconds to make a video and reply, but those extra seconds hold a lot of meaning. Not to mention it’s more personal, visual, and we are living in a world where the visual is often regarded as a better engagement than the written. “ “There’s also more room to set the tone. A lot of things can get lost in a tweet. I might say “thnx” but that person isn’t 100% sure what my tone really was. But with Twitter video, the message comes across loud and clear.”

Social Media Week — The Era of Social Video

TL;DR… Everyone is using Facebook video more and more, and seeing increased benefits such as ‘reach’ and ‘interactions’ on Facebook as a result. (he seems to ignore other mobile-first places such as Instagram, Snapchat and Vine)

I work at Fresh Egg, a digital marketing agency in Worthing, England. We don’t talk enough about social video, so I do instead.
