Kinghorn looks to finish on a high as juniors miss out
Sammi Kinghorn plans to hunt down a medal treble on the final day of world para athletics championships in London.
The T38 200 metres champion has two shots on the final day in this morning’s 100m and tonight’s 800m but the Scot’s coach Ian Mirfin insists one out of two would meet her targets.
He said: “It’s a tough schedule. But the 100m has always been the main one with a medal prospect. There is stiff competition but we’re hopeful she’ll do well.”
Jemma Reekie and Alisha Rees just missed out on their bids for a medal at the European Junior Championships in Grosseto last night.
Reekie was duelling with eventual victor Della Sclabas for the lead with less than two laps remaining of the 3000 metres final.
But 19-year-old – who has a second chance of gold in today’s 1500m final – faded badly on the last lap before being pipped for bronze on the line.
And there was similar heartbreak for Banchory prospect Alisha Rees who lost bronze by five-hundredths of a second in the 200m final as GB&NI team-mate Maya Bruney stormed to victory in a lifetime best of 23.04 seconds.
Scots hopes Ben Greenwood and George Evans will gun for glory in the 800m and discus this afternoon.
