Scots sextet look to shine in Monaco rehearsal
Laura Muir wants the perfect dress rehearsal for next month’s world championships at tonight’s Diamond League stop in Monaco.
The European indoor champion gets a rematch with Kenya’s Hellen Obiri, who beat her in London earlier this month, as well as taking on fellow Brits Steph Twell and Eilish McColgan in the 3000 metres.
And with one eye on her planned 1500–5000 metres double at the worlds, Muir plans to make the most of the workout before heading to an altitude camp in the Pyrenees.
“It will be good to test the legs out over a longer distance,” she said. “I’ve not run that far since the indoor final in Belgrade so it will be useful to see how I feel and to go through some of the approach I’d want to employ in a world championship final.
“It will be a pretty similar field I imagine to what I’ll get in London. It’s very heavily loaded. So I’d like a quick time. See where I’m at compared to the other girls, and then get back into training.”
Britain’s CJ Ujah, with three Diamond League wins already this summer, will look to take advantage of Usain Bolt’s struggles in the 100m while Chris O’Hare, coming off a brilliant victory in London, will square off with Olympic champion Matt Centrowitz in a top-class 1500 metres field.
Lynsey Sharp takes on dominant trio Caster Semenya, Margaret Wambui and Francine Niyonsaba in the 800m.
While Eilidh Doyle is confident she can continue her current impressive form in the 400m hurdles.
“I’m happier more about where I’m finishing than the times,” she said. “I want to be competitive. I had the race in Rome where I was last after hitting a hurdle. I didn’t have a perfect race in London but I still finished fourth. So I’m pretty confident in where I am.”
