Mark Calima Recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s High School Teachers
Mark Calima of Houston, Texas in the United States has led high school bands to a variety of accolades and awards, including Sweepstakes Awards at UIL Concert and Sign Reading Competitions as well as Best in Class and Best Overall Group awards at music festivals.
Mark Calima’s marching bands have consistently been successful in Texas UIL Competitions, attested to by his list of awards: Participant in the 2008 5A UIL State Marching Band competition, Marching Finalist in the 2011 and 2012 5A UIL Area D competitions, Grand National Finalist in the 2013 Bands of America competition, Participant in the 2014 6A UIL State Marching Band competition, and the lead visual instructor of the 2003 Bands of America Grand National Champion.
Mark Calima directed a performing group at the 2013 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois and is the Founder and Director of the Houston Area Summer Wind Ensemble, a non-profit summer band camp. Calima’s personal leadership and expertise has been recognized by the 2009 Who’s Who Among America’s High School Teachers organization as well as the honor of the 2012 Teacher of the Year Award.
Mark Calima is associated with the Texas Band Masters Association, the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association.
Mark Calima is personally proud of his achievements, citing his ability to lead students to achieve National and even International honors regardless of their social or economic origins. Mark Calima works as a judge and arbitrator in competitions of the Drum Corps International and Bands of America.
