harry, harry, harry … one might think, before railing against reality — that you consider your famous talented father isn’t just another curious working-Joe curious about where to park his vote. He (meaning your dad) carries around something Joe will never know — the baggage (or is that entourage?) of celebrity. It has heft. Your dad is not Joe. Joe got no attention. Joe wasn’t written up and didn’t give you cause to write about Joe’s curiosity, or about the merits (or not) of Cruz. Instead you follow in your father’s footsteps — of using celebrity to draw attention to yourself. You aren’t writing about politics, and you certainly aren’t writing about the average Joe. You are writing about the buzz of being the buzz. You know that. Your dad knew that before he attended a speech. He’s old-hat at this. You are new and soon you’ll know that name-dropping impresses nobody. Doesn’t impress me, or Joe. So, Harry, try your hand at writing about ideas — and then people will pay attention to you for you, not for your famous name. And don’t be surprised when Cruz fans, and foes use a celebrity moment, however innocuous it looks, to market a product. Is the product Cruz of Dreyfuss? See, it’s hard to tell. Be your own man Harry — and we’ll be your fan. Or not. But wouldn’t it be great that it’s because of you, not him? As for Joe, he’s still ordinary. He’s not carrying anyone’s name but his own. Hey, ‘Joe for Prez.’!
