Decantables
This week we explored parametric design while familiarizing ourselves with Rhinoceros 3d modeling. I’m really tried to set my expectations for what I might make this week since I’m a complete novice in 3d modeling. To that point, I didn’t set out to explore grasshopper, but instead creating and manipulating shapes in Rhino. I ended up having a bit of fun making a series of ridiculous wine glass “decanters”.
Here’s a 3d model of where I ended up:
I started out by taking a picture of a wine decanter I had laying around, uploading the photo and tracing the curve of one side.
With history turned on, I used the Revolve tool to revolve the curve 360 degrees, following the xy curve.
Using this as the base model, I then found a photo of the different types of wine glasses and manipulated the base model to match each type, creating a series of decanters appropriate for each wine .
The process began similarly to previous projects: most of the time spent was deciding what to make and learning how to navigate and use the software. Once I got used to it and made my first decanter, the rest was much easier.
I’d like to keep iterating on this. The objects still need to be thickened and scaled if they are to be produced as a real object (I couldn’t get offset to do what I had hoped). I’d also like to render them so they look like a more finished piece.
Here’s a short video about the process:
