This brilliant expose on FTL’s Dungeon Master reminded me of how impressed I was with that game, when me and my brother first had a chance to play it on our Amiga 500, back in the very early 90’s. It was like going from playing boring, ugly 2D shooter games to Doom.

I, of course, tried to approximate the dungeon crawling experience on our Amiga using, at the time, Amiga Basic, and it didn’t work — it was too slow, and it never worked no matter what I tried ( I moved on from Basic to C not long after that realization ). I even had dreams of adventures taking place in a Dungeon Master like world; lost in such a dungeon, trying out different wall blocks for any lose ones, setting up traps — it had the kind of profound effect on me only Bard’s Tale I had at the time.
