How to Walk the Walk and Get Promoted

Most great leaders lead by example. It’s like Michael McKinney said, “All leadership is influence.” If the boss knows how to walk the walk, then that will have a huge impact on everyone around him or her, and so on and so on down the line.

I love people who can grind and show passion through hard work. You can’t fake that. If you asked 10 young and successful entrepreneurs to tell you how to get promoted, one constant would keep coming up: WORK HARD!

This goes for the CEO too.

Lead By Example

I’m not one of those CEOs who futz around, pretending to work and expecting people to work hard. That’s not my style. I’ll empty the garbage, wipe down the conference table and then close a $100K deal. That’s my mode.

I like to set the pace in my company and create a culture of ‘oh man, he’s grinding and I want to show him I can too.’ I love that mentality. There’s no one on this planet that can outwork me.

When you lead by example, your actions become loud and clear and this helps define expectations within the company. As a role model and a leader, you create a behavior that shapes the company culture. When everyone on the team knows what their expectations are, it builds confidence and trust. And that’s the making of a successful business.

So how do you get promoted?

“When someone stands out and is constantly putting in the extra work — going the extra mile to define him - or herself as a leader in a particular department — that earns a promotion or elevated title. A promoted employee in one of my past ventures absolutely dominated the sales process and never stopped. They stayed late, asked questions, wanted to learn, and were willing to teach others. They earned a promotion within a year.”
