Leading supplier of power control devices CD Automation UK is launching a family of low-cost soft starters for small AC induction motors to the UK market.
Designed to control a three-phase AC motor from 6A to 200A nominal with internal bypass contactor, the STB range offers three adjustments: initial start voltage, start ramp time and soft stop ramp time. Features include kickstart in 100–300 msec which can be configured by DIP switch; DIN rail or fixing hole mounting from 6 to 32A; and fixing hole mounting from 42 to 200A.
Soft starters within the STO family control a three-phase AC motor from 48A to 200A nominal with internal bypass contactor. Rotary adjustments can be made via the front display panel with regard to initial start voltage, start and stop ramp times. Featuring kickstart in 100, 200 or 300 msec which can be configured by DIP switch; internal electronic overload relay; hole mounting from 42 to 200A fixing; Modbus RTU and USB device as standard — Modbus TCP, Profibus, Profinet and Devicenet connection is available as an option.
STE soft starters are designed to control a 3-phase motor from 48 to 200A and feature a colour touch panel/HMI; special vector control; message/information front display panel in different languages; voltage current/power; trend of electrical variable, 2 configurable digital inputs and outputs; Modbus RTU and USB device as standard. The above Fieldbus connections in addition to Powerlink, Ethercat and Ethernet are available on the STE as an option.
Soft starters are solid-state devices that protect AC electric motors from damage caused by sudden influxes of power by limiting the large initial inrush current associated with motor startup. They provide a gentle ramp up to full speed and are used only at start-up (or stop). Applications that need constant variable speed control require a variable speed controller or drive (VFD). Starting from a set initial voltage soft starters ramp up to the nominal voltage in a set time.
In addition, it is possible to start high friction load with a kickstart that gives to the motor for 100÷300 msec 80% of full voltage without current limit. When started the motor reaches full speed and remains there until stopped and can reach zero speed by inertia or via set ramp down. Dynamic braking is available as an optional extra on the STB, STO and STE soft starters.
Electronic motor thermal protection has been implemented in STO and STE soft starter families, further reducing the mechanical stress on motor and shaft and thereby its energy consumption. Soft starters are typically used in applications where:
 Speed and torque control are required only during startup (and stop if equipped with soft stop)  Reducing large startup inrush currents associated with a large motor is required  The mechanical system requires a gentle start to relieve torque spikes and tension associated with normal startup for example, conveyors, belt-driven systems, gears, etc)  Pumps are used to eliminate pressure surges caused in piping systems when fluid changes direction rapidly
