There is an obvious answer to the air superiority short comings of the F35 — it has only just occurred to me. What we need is an air superiority version of the F35. This would not be too difficult or costly to design and build. It would certainly be cheaper and quicker than waiting for a 6th Generation fighter to come along and it would be more practical than re-opening production of the F/A22 Raptor. With a new more powerful engine, the sensor suite re-orientated from air to ground to air to air and a few other tweeks, the F35 could be an excellent air superiority aircraft.
